The Pursuit of Creative Dreams: How do you overcome your fears?

[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

From an early age, I’ve dreamed of writing professionally. That dream has managed to hang around into my adult life, surviving the children’s-books-on-stapled-scrap-paper phase, the rhyming poetry phase, the “I sound so much more sophisticated now that I don’t rhyme” poetry phase, the book phase, the Creative Writing major in college phase (perhaps I shouldn’t refer to my expensive college degree as a phase?), and now… the blog phase. Yet at every stage of my writing career, I’ve been too frightened to share my writing products with more than a few select family members. Even now, as I prepare to promote a blog – literally designed to be shared – my insides are writhing with anxiety.

Why is it so difficult to share my creative dream with the world?

We all can probably name those people in our lives that are “trying to make it.” That kid you follow on Instagram from your neighboring high school who is trying to make it as a hip hop artist. That teammate who is trying to make it as a stand-up comedian. That girl you met working in the Frye shoe store in Nashville who is trying to make it as a songwriter (in a city literally busting with songwriters).

We recognize these people, perhaps throw them a like or share in support, and then go about our typical days (usually with a wise-crack or two to make ourselves feel better). Very rarely do we stop to appreciate their courage, or allow them to inspire us.

I think we turn away because we, ourselves, are afraid. We are uncomfortable with how open they are with their dreams, because we have shoved our own dreams into a locked, dark drawer (especially when they have to do with our own creativity).

Creative dream

To release our dreams into the world is essentially like calling over an audience of people and saying, “Hey, here’s something that I really want and I worked really hard for.” Then, once you have an audience, giving them all an opportunity to watch you fall face-first into a bucket of poop, inviting them to mutter how stupid you were as they walk away. (Even more fun when you ask them to buy tickets to the show).

It’s terrifying to share our dreams with the world.

It’s also difficult to understand how the people chasing their dreams managed to eradicate their fears. But I’m guessing they would be the first to tell you: the fears never go away. Instead of trying to erase our fears, we need to identify them, understand them, and learn how to embrace them.

Here is a list of common fears, along with questions and mantras to fight them.

  1. The fear of wasting time

I’ve put a lot of time and energy into this blog with the hope that I can gain followers and create an online community. There’s a very real chance, however, that I will never make it big-time as a blogger. Was it all a colossal waste of time?

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you enjoy the process of creation?

If your end goal is money or fame, but you hate what you are doing, then you probably should reevaluate. But if you genuinely enjoy the process, then it is a worthwhile use of time.

  • What would you be doing with your time if not spent on this creation?

This is a simple question, but an important one – and it involves you having an understanding of your values and personal well-being. If the project is taking away from other important things in your life (i.e. relationships, your livelihood, your health) then you might want to think about how to balance everything better. If you are filling open time with this creation, then shed this fear of wasting time. Time is meant to be filled.

Mantra to fight the fear:

I enjoy working on this creation and, even if it goes nowhere, this time spent on it gives me joy.

.

2. The fear of not being good enough

I can literally hear the voices of friends, acquaintances, students, myself saying, ‘She wants to be a professional writer? Seriously? She’s not even that good of a writer.’ These voices sometimes stop me dead in my tracks and make me wonder if I should even try.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Realistically, can you improve?

Some things might be impossible for you (I will never be able to dunk a basketball, no matter how hard I try), but many things can be improved with time, dedication, and practice. Does your dream involve something you can get better at?

  • Who am I comparing myself to, and why?

Ah, comparison… the bane of human happiness. If you are always comparing yourself to someone else, you’ll not only hold yourself to impossible (and inauthentic) standards, but you’ll be doing yourself and others a disservice. You are the creator here, and you have something unique to offer. The only measuring stick you should use is your own self-improvement.

  • What can my creation offer to others?

Here is where you have to give yourself some credit. Silence the doubt and modesty and whatever other defense mechanisms you’ve learned, and force yourself to come up with an actual answer you can hold onto. And if you can’t think of anything, hold onto this: your courage in pursuing and sharing a personal dream can inspire someone else to do the same.

Mantra to fight the fear:

I am motivated to improve, this process brings me joy, and I am a unique person with unique ideas worth sharing.

.

3. The fear of being judged

The fear of being judged and feeling shame is perhaps the most universal, and most debilitating, fear that we humans experience. Questions like: What will they say about me? What will they think about me? ran through my brain constantly as I prepared this blog.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Why do you care what others think of you?

This might seem like a basic question, but actually try to answer it. What is your motivator here? How do others’ thoughts actually affect you?

  • Do you believe in what you are creating?

You cannot control how other people will react to your dream, no matter how much you may want to. But if you believe it is a worthwhile dream that deserves its place in the universe, then hold onto this belief. Chances are, someone else will too.

  • What is the worst thing that others could say about you, and can you live with that?

Oftentimes we get bogged down with the “judgmental haze” we imagine. Break it down. Will someone think your dream is stupid (and someone probably will)? Can you live with that? I bet you can live with more than you think you can.

Mantra to fight the fear:

I believe in what I am doing, and how people receive my dream is out of my control and therefore something I shouldn’t let control me.

.

An underlying fear lies beneath all of these fears:

The fear of failing

Of course, there would be no need to worry if we were guaranteed success. If I knew this blog would take off, gain millions of followers, and lead to five book deals, I’d have published it years ago. But I don’t know that. And I’m also not striving for that.

In our media-filled world with celebrities, fame, and breakthrough highlights, I believe our perception of success has become skewed. Doing something isn’t enough unless there’s a huge audience, and even then “making it big time” has reached impossible standards. When we place so much emphasis on this heightened “success” of our dream, we bring in the weight of all sorts of fears: wasting time, not being good enough, being judged. In the end, we are only hurting ourselves.

Instead, we need to redefine what success looks like.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What does success look like for you?
  • What do you hope to get out of your dream?
  • Why are you pursuing your dream in the first place?

Your answers to these questions will help to unlock a whole new realm of possibilities for you. At the end of the day, your dream should be defined by your pursuit of it, rather than the final product. The potential of this new mindset will be louder than any of your other fears.

Finally, I encourage you to embrace one more fear:

The fear of not pursuing your creative dreams.

Because let’s be honest: you’ll survive if your dream doesn’t pan out. Even if you don’t “make it big time,” you can live a very satisfying and happy life (literally billions of people do it every single day). But before that happens, you need to answer: can you live with yourself if you never tried?

If the answer is no, then it’s time to get going.

I believe, without a doubt, that the pursuit of your dream will have a far greater influence than any outcome that comes from it – both on others, and on you.
