Remember that song from Aladdin, when Aladdin takes Jasmine’s hand and sings, “I can show you the world?” They go on a magic carpet ride (first date – n.b.d.), fly around wonder to wonder, and end up in “a whole new world.”

Let’s analyze the lyrics a bit more in-depth, shall we? And I don’t mean looking for sexual innuendos (although you can do that, too). What I want to draw attention to is the fact that Aladdin set out on this ride with Jasmine and somehow his world was completely transformed into something new.

Perhaps his world changed romantically, sure, but I don’t think it happened to him as a traveler.

That takes a little more intention.  .

We grow up in a society in which “travel” offers the easy, quick, and respectable response to a lot of questions. What would you do if you won the lottery? Travel. What do you want to do when you retire? Travel. Why did you decide not to get a job until you’re 32 and live out of your parents’ basement instead? Travel. *Cue thoughtful and judgment-diminishing murmurs of affirmation.

I, too, fell into this pattern of pulling “Travel” from my back pocket like a stock photo from my wallet. See look, I do want to travel – I have a photo of it! It wasn’t until I began traveling, and traveling on my own accord, when I finally tossed the standard photo aside in lieu of my own.

I don’t blame the societal-reinforcing photo; in fact, I’m grateful for it. It got me on the plane in the first place. It helped expand my world.

But we all reach a point when we need to identify why we do certain things in order to make them truly our own. I travel because I want to, and I like to. The choices I make for travel are entirely dependent on what I want (and they are fluid).

What do you think of when you hear the world travel? Your answer will help determine a lot of future decisions, but more importantly, it will help you come to experience and understand those experiences on a more meaningful level.

Suitcase travel questions

.

First, you need to make sure that you’re not traveling for the wrong reasons:

1. Don’t travel to escape in the nonliteral sense

If you’re a fugitive running from the law, all the power to you. But if you think leaving a problem-ridden life temporarily will make your problems magically disappear, I’m sorry to say that it won’t work (and you won’t find Aladdin’s genie on your trip).

2. Don’t travel to show off

There is so much public sharing in our current culture, it can be easy to fall into the category of, “I have to post cool photos to show off my cool life!” Your life is cool because you’re in it – that’s enough.

3. Don’t travel because you think you’re supposed to

Herein is the big one, the internal conflict between what you actually want and what much of society is telling you to do. Travel is fantastic – for some people. It doesn’t have to be for you.

.

Here are three reasons that should be inspiring your travel. You should travel if you want to:

1. Be exposed to new people, culture, and ideas

As much as you might think the family next door with the 27 flamingos in their yard are a “different breed of people,” you need to go a bit further away to truly be immersed in a place where you are the outsider, not the norm.

2. Have new experiences

If you’ve imprinted an ass print on your couch in front of your TV, you probably should start by getting out and trying some activities around your house first. But if you’ve done a lot of things in the area, it’s time to travel to other places and see what else they have to offer.

3. Learn about yourself

Turns out we learn most about ourselves when we’re in situations that are furthest from ourselves. You know who you are when you’re in your own home and your own community. Who are you when you’re outside of these?

.

Only when you want these things with an open heart and an open mind will you reap their benefits. Your world will get bigger because you, not society, wanted it to.

•                   •                    •

In my opinion, Aladdin got on that flying carpet with misplaced intentions. He was there to escape his lies, show off to Jasmine, and pretend to be someone he was not. He was traveling for all the wrong reasons, which is why I take issue with the notion of his “whole new world.”

Desert travel Aladdin

Be sure, when you get on your flying carpet (or like, regular stationary carpet – no judgments), you’re traveling for the right reasons.

It’s the only way you’ll eventually get to that new world. Fingers crossed there’s a thieving monkey in it.
