Be a Follower: When and why should you follow a blog?

When I told my friend I wanted to start a blog, she asked, “Do people actually follow blogs anymore?” It was a fair question, and one I didn’t have the answer to.

The thing was, I didn’t even follow any blogs.

In an era when I can access any information I want, simply by typing in words into my Google search engine, it never occurred to me to look to one specific blog for content. If I landed on a blog because it had what I was looking for, then great – but why subscribe to someone when I don’t know what they are going to send to me?

Turns out, this not knowing is whole point (or at least, a large part of it).

By following a blog, you are giving yourself the opportunity to be exposed to ideas that you might not have thought of yourself. In a world filled with “be a leader” quotes, it can be empowering to be a follower.

The Benefits of Being a Follower

Now that I follow several blogs and authors, I understand what I was missing out on. With social media and the constant time we spend online, it is easy to reap the benefits of being a follower once you commit.

1. You get ideas sent to you that you want, but maybe wouldn’t have sought out

My favorite blogger talks about everything from relationships, to happiness, to failure. I wouldn’t always type these words into a google search (in fact, I rarely would), but I love receiving his new posts and diving in.

2. You feel connected with a blogger and enjoy familiar updates from them

The more you read a specific blogger, the more familiar you will become with them. Over time, you will start to feel connected to them. I don’t mean in a “my friend is online and we never talk in real life” type deal. I mean the natural connection that comes from common interests, shared ideas, and life updates. (Sidenote: many bloggers will actually respond to their followers if they reach out)

3. You join a community of followers who have multiple things to bond over

The need for belonging is engrained in all of us humans. When you follow someone, you join a tribe of people who also deemed it important and worthy to follow that same person. Sometimes there will be opportunities to interact with other followers, other times not, but you still will be a part of something. Don’t belittle that fact.

Follow blog

Even with these benefits, I would not suggest you run out right now and put your email into every blog you come across. Quite the opposite. I suggest you take your time, look over blogs thoroughly, and find the one(s) that calls to you. You will only reap the benefits if you understand the five basic principles for choosing a blog to follow.

Important Points to Consider Before Following Someone:

1. You like the person’s voice

Maybe you relate to the person’s sarcastic, self-deprecating jokes. Maybe you appreciate the person’s use of puns (I mean, who wouldn’t?). Maybe the person’s voice sounds like someone you would enjoy having a conversation with. Whatever the case, it is important that you genuinely enjoy reading (and listening to) them.

2. You share similar interests with the person

Not surprisingly, people are going to blog about things that interest them. While some people will have a very narrow niche, others will blog about a variety of topics. Generally, this variety will still revolve around a few basic ideas, though. You are going to want to follow someone who shares similar interests.

3. You enjoy the majority of content on the blog

You don’t need to like 100% of the blog’s posts, but you should enjoy the majority of them. Do an inventory before hitting that “subscribe” button. Are you scrolling through article after article? Do the titles and menu options call out to you? If you aren’t spending more than a few minutes on the site, chances are you won’t put much time toward getting updates.

4. You find the content relevant and useful to your life

There are many blogs out there that have engaging and interesting content – but is it useful to you? I might be sucked into a blog for the better part of an hour, clicking through post after post about the conspiracies throughout history. That doesn’t mean that I will want to continually go back to that site. Make sure you follow someone who delivers ideas to you that will be relevant to your life today and next week.

5. You are inspired by the blog

Above all else – common interests, enjoyable reads, intriguing questions (oh hey, questions) – the blog should inspire you. This inspiration can come in many different forms, and point toward many different aspects of your life, but it is an essential component for following something or someone.

I’m not going to lie; my original intention in writing this post was to shamelessly encourage more people to follow my blog. However, the more I thought about the idea of “following,” the more I found myself focusing on my own experiences as a follower. And the joy I’ve gotten from surrounding myself with people and content that inspires me (and makes me laugh) regularly.

So ask yourself: what ideas do you want in your life?

Go find them, follow them, and feel inspired.
