Let me tell you a funny story. When I was in first grade, plump full of sheltered naivete and goody-two-shoesy goodness, I began to develop a basic understanding of swear words. By which I mean, I developed a completely false and uninformed understanding of swear words.

You see, for a brief stint, I thought that the word “ship” was a swear. I know what you’re thinking: ship is a very common word. And you’d be right – it is. But at some point I probably heard the word shit and thought that the person said ship, and rather than ask someone how this made any sense, I created my own reasoning for the debacle:

Whether you used the word “ship” as a swear word all depended on your context.

How I believed that a very common word could also double as a very common swear is impressive even to me, but what might be more impressive is how afraid I was to use the wrong version of the word. (In case you’re wondering, your answer is yes. Yes, I was a very cool kid). I began to clarify when I said the word “ship” – “I saw a ship, you know, like the very big boat.”

Don’t worry, I have a better handle on most swear words now (although can someone please tell me if saying “smartass” is a considered swearing or not?? Asking for a friend…). I also have a better grasp of context.

Despite how cool this story makes me sound, I didn’t bring it up to show off my inspiring personal growth. I brought it up because I think it sets the stage nicely for a word in our society that we need to change our mindset about, especially women.

That word is “just.”

We need to adopt the first-grade-Kara mindset for just. Depending on the context, it can either be a common word… or a swear.

I probably don’t have to tell you that there is still gender inequality in the workplace. We’ll have to explore the many, many, many questions that we can ask about that for later. But right now I just want to look at a small thing. It’s just a small point about language. I was just wondering if you ever thought about it.

We overuse the word “just.” And it is undermining what we say.

When we use the word “just,” we are making what we say seem small.

We are trying to sound nicer, more likable. Please sir, I just have a teensy favor to ask of you *small, high-pitched, whispering mousie voice.* As if what we’re asking, and therefore we, are an inconvenience.

  • I just wanted to ask.
  • I just had a question.
  • I just thought it might be a good idea.

Until I became aware of the word, I was a huge culprit of its overuse. I still have to catch myself frequently. But the more I read about our use of language, and the more I’ve tried to make myself assertive (despite it being much more comfortable to be the agreeable, likable one), the more aware I’ve become of the importance of language. You’d think it shouldn’t have taken a creative writing major this long to learn this, but like, at least I don’t qualify ship with big boat anymore.

.

My emails would be filled with phrases like:

I was just wondering if you could send me the information.

(Really, Kara? Just sitting and just wondering…)

I was wondering if you could send me the information.

(Better, but not great.)

Could you send me the information?

(Ah, a direct question. We’re finally getting somewhere.)

I need you to send me the information.

This might seem too aggressive for you (although I imagine that’s years of living in the patriarchy whispering in your ear). But ultimately, this is the ultimate purpose of my statement. For me to do my job, I need someone to do theirs.

It’s not about sounding more masculine or less feminine. It’s about being conscious of our language in purposeful in how we communicate. Even small changes – like removing the word “just” – can go a long way in how others view us and how we think about ourselves.

So I challenge you to be more aware of the context in which you use “just.”

If you can replace it with a time increment (I just got back = Five minutes ago I got back), then you are fine. But if you’re using it to soften your message, and therefore lessen yourself, then you need to get rid of it.

Because the days of women lessening themselves need to end. That ship has sailed.

And I don’t mean the big boat.
