For Martin Luther King, Jr Day, my school put on an assembly to celebrate Dr. King and all that he stood for. We heard from a variety of speakers about personal experiences, as well as broader calls to action.

The assembly was, in my opinion, one of the more impactful ones that we’ve had. (Of course, we’ve also had assemblies in which students played musical chairs or marshmallow toss…so perhaps not a high bar?) We celebrated our students of diversity and the importance of service to others.

One speech, in particular, made me think of my blog’s pursuit. “What is your life’s blueprint?” gave direction to help people find clarity, connection, and meaning.

In the last year of his life, King gave a speech to a group of high school students. The address, known as “What is Your Life’s Blueprint?” gave guidelines for the students to find success in life. In it, he hit on clarity, connection, and meaning… almost directly.

I don’t say this to compare myself to Martin Luther King, Jr, or act like we’re in any way close to the same status (my 34 blog followers are great proof of that). Quite the contrary, the parallels helped inspire me in my pursuits.

It reaffirmed my confidence in declaring clarity, connection, and meaning as my three principles.

Without further ado, let’s look at quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech and why they help encourage us to find clarity, connection, and meaning in our own lives.

“What is your Life’s Blueprint?”

“A deep belief in your own dignity, your own worth, and your own somebodiness.”

I don’t know about you, but having a deep belief in your own “somebodiness” makes me think that you have to know what you “somebodiness” is. Who are you? What do you stand for?

King doesn’t merely say, “Everyone is important.” He says, You are important because of who you are. Embrace it.

It’s not very easy to embrace your own unique worth if you’re not sure who you are. Yes, we all know the basics: I’m 26, female, named Kara, a teacher (Which is enough to be worthy, don’t get me wrong.) But it’s the underlying layers – our passions, reactions, and core values – that give us something to embrace and believe in.

.

“The determination to achieve excellence in your various fields of endeavor.”

Determination doesn’t come from external rewards or “because we have to” forces – at least not in its purest form. True determination comes from an intrinsic motivation to do something because we believe it matters.

Our culture is filled with false metrics of success and junk values.

Some of these junk values, such as owning the newest, most expensive technology, feel like they should be our driving force. And we get caught up in them, too, believing we need to attain a certain level of success to be happy.

In the end, however, we will only achieve excellence if we derive meaning from our pursuits.

.

“A commitment to the eternal principles of beauty, love, and justice….You have a responsibility to seek to make life better for everybody.”

Finally, King defines meaning with a more precise focus: to make life better for everybody.

While he doesn’t directly speak to relationships, he does speak to the importance of social connectedness. Our lives are not fulfilled if they are limited to individualistic wellbeing. We need to be committed to the welfare of others.

Ultimately, our belonging to others is what will bring us happiness and fulfillment.

Did Martin Luther King, Jr. know that MyQuesitonLife would one day base its ideas off of his critical speech? Probably not. But as we tackle the challenges and distractions of our 21st century, I can’t help but think how valid his words still are.
