Motivation and discipline don’t just got together; they rely on each other.

If you’ve checked out “Find Clarity,” you’ve probably seen “self-awareness” or some variation written on a lot of titles (along with snappy titles like “drastically improves your life,” because my research tells me that Pinterest likes that kind of thing. Note: they do). My second post focused on ways to be more self-aware, and I divided them up into three categories:

  1. Actionable thought – you’ve got to consciously do something with your thoughts
  2. Minimal actionable behavior – you’ve got to do something, but it only takes a little effort
  3. Actionable behavior – you’ve got to actually do something and put some effort into it

You might have noticed they each require you to “do something” – so why did I split them up?

Because it actually takes quite a bit to summon this effort. The easier it is, the more likely someone might try it.

Putting effort into something requires two things: motivation and discipline.

First, we need to be motivated to do something. Like, really motivated. Do you understand how it can benefit you? Do you actually believe it will improve your life?

If you don’t, I might as well be telling a cow to pick up knitting; I’d get the same results.

But let’s say you do believe self-awareness can drastically, dramatically, insurmountably improve your life. (Pinterest is just click-firing away at that one). You still need the discipline to put in the effort.

Discipline is difficult in our current society. We are inundated with information every day, and there are constant stimuli around us. Our phones, our work, our computers, our media. Because of these things continually pulling our attention, we feel like we’re continually doing something.

As a result, to take the time to read all 2k words of the article seems like a lot. If we do put in that effort, we expect instant results.

Because that’s another thing our information-overload society does to us: it makes us expect things instantly. If we put in the effort, we want to see positive results… immediately. Just like when we send a text, we can get an immediate reply. Or if we Google an answer, we can find the answer in a second.

I think this is why our motivation dwindles with longer, more challenging endeavors. Self-awareness? Sure, we’d love that. But we can’t get the answer in a quick search or one-time action.

I’m not trying to sound all high-and-mighty. In fact, I’m right there with you. I had plans to write a personal anecdote with every “self-awareness strategy” I wrote, and then… I didn’t. Too much else to do (or feel like I’m doing), and no easy, short-term benefits.

Motivation is like a cycle: the more you feed into it and see your results, the more motivation you can summon.

It might seem like I’ve gotten a little distracted from my original point (I might have…). Nevertheless, there’s a reason I have three categories of increasing effort-actions for developing your self-awareness. I don’t expect you to go out and journal every day.

If you’re motivated, start small with the three suggestions for “actionable thought.” If you feel any positive change from your new lines of thinking, tap into your motivation to put in more effort.

In the end, you might just motivate and discipline your way to self-awareness.
