Themes of self-discovery, self-awareness, and intuition in The Little Book of Big Knowing: Tiny Bursts of Insight to Wake Up your Soul.

I never put much stock into the concept of intuition growing up. Sure, I had a general understanding of the word itself, but it rarely found its place in the language I used. Even after I began blogging on self-awareness and self-discovery, “intuition” never made an appearance in my writing.

It’s not that I distrusted the concept of intuition or thought it didn’t belong. After all, I write about the intersection of human nature and creative exploration. (At least I try to.) But “following my intuition” got lost in my life somewhere between my desperate desire for certainty and my logical planning. After all, you don’t leave much time for intuition when you fill every free moment with something.

what is intuition

My obsession with productivity wasn’t the sole reason for my neglect of intuition. Another culprit was that I never took the time to consider or embrace the word.

Michele Sammons, an intuitive, highlighted the importance of defining for me when I interviewed her. “Once you give something a definition, then you’re in a relationship with it. You’ve made it real,” she said in a conversation about intuition and purpose.

She encouraged me to sit with new words and redefine them for myself. As we talked, I became more aware of the importance of this process. By exploring new words and ideas, we can take what we want for our own understanding. Then, we can make it real.

Since talking to her and reading her book, I’ve entered into a new relationship with the word “intuition.” And I’m so glad I did.

.

Who is Michele Sammons?

Michele Sammons didn’t begin her journey in the field of intuition and life coaching. Instead, she did what many of us do; she followed the customary paths the society lays out for us. She pursued a corporate career for over a decade before shifting toward new possibilities.

For her, these new possibilities encompassed studying energy and intuition.

“Some people have a straight path in life. They’re born into this world, and they know who they’re going to be,” Michele said. “But a whole lot of people don’t have a clue, or they thought they did, but they don’t. That was me.”

The Little Book of Big Knowing intuition

I asked Michele about her background because I was reading her book, The Little Book of Knowing.  With words like “soul” and “energy,” the book represented a field of thinking that was new to me. If you’ve read any of my blog posts, you know I like to cite human biology, evolutionary tendencies, and cultural norms, among other things. My analytical brain likes evidence and concrete answers to sift through, ideas supported by facts and statistics. (Heck, the number of times I’ve typed, “humans are wired to lack self-awareness” is too many to count.)

But recently, I’ve been trying to expand my perspective on self-awareness and purpose. Yes, I still define self-awareness as being able to identify our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Yet, I also consistently promote expansion and exploration as we pursue our purpose. Could my definition of self-awareness have room to expand, as well?

Make way for intuition, folks.

.

What Is Intuition?

Michele Sammons lays out her definitions for important words on her website. According to her definition, intuition is “your inner wisdom – that little voice inside that whispers guidance to you.”

Michele explained to me that we all have intuition and “intuitive hits.” Images and desires pop into our minds and, if we’re listening, they can guide us on our journeys.

The problem is, many of us don’t give ourselves the time, space, or trust to listen to our intuition.

Michele equates intuition to a “gentle breeze.” Unfortunately, life is often like living in a casino; it’s challenging to notice the breeze when lights and sounds overstimulate us. We get distracted by cultural myths, self-doubt, and “shoulds.”

What is intuition

The good news for us is that we can strengthen our intuitive abilities through practice and experience. Over time, we can become better at realizing what gives us purpose and how to bring it to our lives.

It didn’t take me long to see where intuition fell into step beside self-awareness and self-discovery. Self-awareness is understanding ourselves; self-discovery is exploring our purpose. And intuition is all the little messages along the way that let us tap into who we are and who we can be.

Michele’s collection of ideas in The Little Book of Big Knowing helped me further reflect, redefine, and expand my new understanding.

.

The Little Book of Big Knowing:  Book Review

The Little Book of Big Knowing is a collection of short, uplifting insights and ideas. Michele refers to us as our most foundational level: a soul residing in a physical body and human experience. In its essence, the book gives advice for this human experience – and our journey of life and discovery.

I asked Michele what informed her writing. She said that, as she wrote, she reminded herself who it was for: the person she was ten years ago, going through a period of seeking and reflection. The pages are filled with “gentle nudges and humor” to help anyone on this “seeking: journey.

In particular, she felt the need to express joy and laughter in self-discovery. “I spent a lot of time back then with questions, and I drove myself crazy not having answers,” she reflected. “But the answers come the more we’re open and at peace with them.”

She uses words – words that she’s defined – like soul, energy, vibration, and source. But, just like with intuition, she encourages us as readers to determine our definitions and meanings. Whether it’s a new word, idea, or concept, every tiny burst of insight allows us to create new meaning on our self-discovery journey.

We might discard some new things; we might embrace others. But, regardless of what we do, this process will develop our self-awareness.

.

Themes in The Little Book of Big Knowing

Despite it being filled with about 100 insights, The Little Book of Big Knowing begins to showcase some helpful themes to think about.

Themes in The Little Book of Big Knowing

  1. We are creators

Humans love feeling a sense of control, yet we often try to control the wrong things. Uncertainty and anxiety make us feel small, trapped, and helpless. However, we are in control of one huge element: our thinking. And, in one tiny burst, Michele reminds us that we create our experience through our thoughts.

By adopting a creator’s mindset, we can begin to shift our thinking to one of possibility. Whether we’re making a life choice, following our emotions, or simply perceiving an event, our journey will drastically be affected by how we choose to think.

  1. Self-awareness is about tapping into our intuition

As I read page after page, I couldn’t escape the beautiful idea that we all have an inner voice. Yes, many of us either ignore this voice or can’t hear it very well. However, we all can develop our intuition and begin to trust ourselves more.

“Only by being fully conscious in the present moment of your thoughts, choices, desire, state of being, and actions can you genuinely know who you are,” Michele writes in one burst. “Listen intently, my friend. Listen consciously.”

  1. Listen and follow our desires and excitement

Many of us struggle to find direction and purpose in life, and a ton of resources exist to try to help us find them. (I mean, I just wrote a whole post on finding direction and another quiz on finding life purpose). While these resources can be helpful, The Little Book of Big Knowing reminds us of the most fundamental thing we can do. We must listen to our inner desires and follow what excites us.

When we can strip everything else away – societal pressures, cultural norms, etc. – we can make space for our true emotions to shine through. Then, over time, we can learn to trust them.

  1. Life is meant to be celebrated

Many of us adopt a viewpoint on what life should look like and feel like from a young age. (Side note: in our interview, Michele kindly responded to one of my questions by saying, “I’m not a proponent of “should.”) These mindsets infiltrate everything we do without our awareness.

Tiny bursts in The Little Book of Big Knowing explain that life is imperfect. Part of life is not only to accept the imperfections but to celebrate them.

  1. Trust and define your own truth

If some of these ideas don’t resonate with you, that’s okay. On the very first page of The Little Book of Knowing, Michele writes, “Although you don’t need it, you have my permission to take what resonates and chuck the rest; trusting, always, your own inner-wisdom above all else.”

At times, Michele uses her words and definitions. At others, she includes a variety. But throughout it all, she highlights the fact that we can define, express, and experience life in our own way. You need to be true to yourself (and embrace this hidden truth that often holds us back.)

.

Conclusion: Intuition and The Little Book of Big Knowing

Trusting our intuition is not something many of us do very well. However, our intuition is precisely what we need to develop our self-awareness and discover what gives our lives purpose.

In our conversation, Michele Sammons gave me an introduction to “intuition” – a word that I’ve since embraced in my self-awareness terminology. And in her book, she gifted me a whole slew of ideas and concepts that had my mind churning with questions.

I trust these questions can yield the answers I’m looking for on my journey. Even better, they can give me answers that I don’t know I’m looking for… yet.

To me intuition is a strong feeling that something is about to happen-good or bad. When it happens, first response is ” I knew it!”. My Mom was very intuitive, so I think I inherited it from her. At times intuition can be disturbing. I try not to dwell on it. Just my opinion. Love you guys. Mimi
