Imagine a world in which you are told everything about your life. You are told how to act. You are told how to think. You are told what to learn (i.e. our current education system). You are told who to be with. You are told what to spend your time doing.

I can’t even continue this example because it’s making me feel like I swallowed a squirming millipede coated in grandma’s moldy bread pudding (how’s that for a visual). It’s making me feel like this for two reasons. First, because it sounds like a brainless, purposeless, miserable existence. Second, because it happens. All. The. Time. In ways that we are aware of and unaware of.

But it doesn’t have to, and there’s a very simple anecdote to take back ownership of your brain and of your life: questions.

Without further ado, below is a list of what questions can give you.

Questions lead to innovation.

If everyone was content with what we have, we would never have anything new. Questions like, “How can this be done better?” and “Have we considered a different way?” open us up to infinite possibilities. Questions should always lead to more questions.

Questions lead to connection.

Every human is literally wired to thrive on connection with others. The quickest and truest way to connect with others is to ask questions and get to know them. The more we can be vulnerable and establish trust, the stronger relationships we can forge.

Questions lead to self-awareness.

In a world filled with parents, peers, mandated school curriculum, and media, it can be easy to slip into adopting a belief system that we are raised in. The real work comes in when we step back, ask ourselves questions, and figure out what we really think and believe in.

Questions lead to understanding.

Understanding comes on many different levels and in many different forms, but in its essence, it allows us to see the meaning of something. This might be the reason behind an action, the explanation of a system, the answer to a problem. Whatever the case, questions help us get to the deepest level – the “why” – so we can accept (or challenge) it.

Questions lead to confidence.

Let’s face it. We all lack confidence at some point in our lives. The better we understand ourselves and the environment we are living in, the more self-assured we can be in our own decisions. This comes from extensive and ongoing questions. If we can identify the answers, and understand them, we can more accurately decide if we can stand behind them.

Questions lead to happiness.

Unless you are the luckiest person on earth, you won’t stumble upon a fortune teller who tells you exactly what you need to be happy. You will need to figure out the answer to “What makes you happy?” through life experiences, reflection, and of course, questions.

Questions lead to empathy.

Rather than live in the safety of “me versus others,” questions can teach you about others’ experiences. Not only will this help you learn about yourself, but you will be better able to understand and share in the feelings of others. Imagine how much better the world would be if we all asked, “What is it like for them? Why?”

Questions lead to a bigger world.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

Until you ask.
